Speaking to the committee (limited to 2 minutes per person) is extremely important. It demonstrates widespread opposition and the political costs of supporting the bill. The committee offers you both in-person and Zoom call options for speaking. While nothing is more effective than the live presence of people at the capital opposed to a bill, the Zoom option is an extremely convenient way to allow you to stay productive at your own desk while you wait to speak and given the late scheduling and notice of the hearing will likely be your only option.
Your comments giving examples of the problems with mandated lease renewals and payment of relocation costs will be particularly useful and relevant. However, even just telling the committee about your very worst resident ever and how important it was to you and your community will be helpful.
How to Sign Up to Speak
The link to sign up to speak (live or zoom) is Sign Up to Testify.
Once your testimony option is chosen, you will be prompted with the next setup options:
* Click committee and hearing item
* Enter Committee Name
* Enter Meeting Date and Time
* Hearing Item: Enter the Bill you wish to speak about
From here, you will continue to fill in your personal information.
* It will ask you who are you representing
* Please list “self” or “your organization”
* It’s best for you to sign up as self or representing your company. Don’t sign up as speaking on behalf of the Colorado Apartment Association (they already know we’re opposed to the bill).
If you are speaking remotely, you will receive an email with a link to the Zoom meeting after registering online. On the day of the committee, you will click on the link and follow the instructions sent to you about how to proceed on Zoom.
A Bill can only be effectively opposed with our united efforts.
